Student Council

A Student Council is a representative structure through which students in a post-primary school can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management and staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students. Our Student Council, led by our Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, provides an experience for students in representative leadership – a preparation for taking one’s place in society. The Council puts forward the views of students on a range of school issues, and works with school management to promote a healthy and safe environment for all the members of the school community.

In Christ King Girls’ Secondary School we are fortunate to have a very active and involved Student Council. The main role of our Student Council is “to promote the interests of the school and the involvement of students in the affairs of the school, in co-operation with the Board, parents and teachers”.

Our Student Council Aims:

  • To promote an environment conducive to educational and personal development
  • To promote friendship and respect among pupils
  • To support the management and staff in the development of the school
  • To represent the views of the students on matters of general concern to them

Head Girl & Deputy Head Girl

These are the most significant student positions in the school and the choice of candidates reflects the high regard that they are held in by members of the school community.

The Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl represent not just the students, but the whole school community and must be capable of fulfilling a variety of roles and responsibilities from the everyday routine to meeting visiting dignitaries and public speaking at school events.

Class Prefects

Class Prefects are chosen through a rigorous selection process by the in school management team. They are identified as somebody with leadership qualities.

Prefects are a layer between the staff and students in the school:

  • They liaise with the Student Council
  • Represent the school at public events
  • They are role models for fellow students in the school
  • Attend Information Evenings for Parents

The Student Council in Christ King is comprised of class representatives from TY, fifth and sixth year, elected within each class group, who sit in meetings every month. At these meetings school matters are discussed, and the class representatives are given work to do. This could be relaying ideas to their class, and making students’ voices heard. This dialogue empowers the students allowing them to truly have a voice informing the direction of the development of their educational environment.

The Student Council have organised many events throughout the year, including refurbishment of the student Assembly Hall and discussions on uniform reform. It is undeniable that the student council does valuable work without looking for recognition, and it is greatly appreciated.

The school is very proud of its student representatives.
