Jennifer Ohia wins Silver Ticket to Junk Kouture Regional Final March 2017

Huge congratulations to TY student, Jennifer Ohia, who recently won a silver ticket to the Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture Regional Finals. Jennifer made the beautiful creation herself out of recyclable materials. Jennifer is now going forward to the Regional Final which takes place in Limerick on 10th March 2017. Now in its seventh year, the all-Ireland leading fashion and art competition for secondary schools challenges students to create unique, original and innovative outfits from recycled materials and junk. Open to students nationwide, entries for 2017 surpassed all expectations making it the biggest competition to date.

We wish Jennifer the very best of luck in the next round of the competition.

Trip to Calcutta February 2017

Ten of our fifth year students travelled to Calcutta over the February mid-term break with their teachers Ms Sarah Curtin, Ms Maire O’Brien and Mr Fergal O’Leary. This trip was in conjunction with the HOPE Foundation. HOPE is dedicated to promoting the protection of street & slum children primarily in Kolkata (Calcutta), and the most underprivileged in India, to promote immediate and lasting change in their lives. The girls had been working extremely hard over the last 18 months to fundraise for the trip. The students who travelled witnessed, first-hand, the work of HOPE and the extremities of life in Kolkata. Supported throughout their time in India, the students were introduced to poverty, the realities of street children and the joy of HOPE. The students spent time visiting HOPE projects, interacting with children and adolescents who are in HOPE supported projects and immersing themselves in Indian culture. Our students will remember the experience for the rest of their lives, and become more aware of their place in society and how they can make the world a better place by caring for people who are less well off than themselves.

I would like to pay a special tribute to all of the students who travelled to Kolkata as they showed amazing maturity, compassion and committment while they were in India. They also fundraised a substantial sum of money, which will be donated to the various HOPE projects. It is a hugely positive and life-changing experience. It gives students the opportunity to engage in experiences not available in the classroom, encourages greater independence and enhances social and cultural development. Well done girls

What’s your Gut Instinct?

The Glucksman Gallery, UCC curated the exhibition “Gut Instinct” from 25 November 2016 – 19 March 2017. A number of fifth year students from Christ King Girls Secondary School created their own response to the exhibition which will be on display in the Glucksman Gallery, UCC opening 28th February 2017. In December the students visited The Glucksman Gallery and were given a tour of the exhibition “Gut Instinct”. The artwork in this exhibition explored the idea of how the foods, which we consume, effect our mental well-being and general health.  Since their interpretations of the term “Gut Instinct” was going to be exhibited through the medium of print, the students participated in a print workshop in The Glucksman.

The students then proceeded to create a short film for the exhibition where they had an abundance of ideas.  They decided on a blind taste test as it explored the raw human reaction/emotion that a range of food flavours could evoke with an underlying vein of humour.

Pictured below are some of the 5th year students involved in the creation of the film and the art exhibition. Also included are: Tadhg Crowley, Curator Education at the Glucksman, Càit Watkins, Deputy Principal Christ King Girls’ Secondary School and Catherine Buckley, APC Microbiome Institute UCC.
