Seachtain na Gaeilge 9ú – 16ú Márta

Seachtain na Gaeilge runs from 5th to the 17th March this year and it is a time of ceol agus craic in Christ King Girls Secondary School on the South Douglas Road. We always run events for the occasion but this year the students were particularly involved in organising it. (Emma Ní Luanaigh, Teacher) The transition year students were especially keen to get involved and organised events for younger students such as the Tóraíocht Seamróige (shamrock hunt) for first years. Fifth year students were also spurred to involvement by their strong reaction to Enda Kenny’s views on Irish in the run up to the election. They felt it was an unfair generalisation to say that students are negative towards the language. They designed posters to express how they feel and will write to the Taoiseach as Ghaeilge to have their say on the matter. ‘Is ionsaí é ar ár dteanga agus ba cheart dúinn é a chaomhnú.’ (Aisling McCarthy 5th year)

Among the events organised for Seachtain na Gaeilge were céilís with the local boys schools, art competitions, letter writing competitions, lá glas, and a classroom competition. There will be a Lá Gaeilge for Leaving Certificate students before their orals. This event is organised every year, a day of caint agus comhrá to help the girls prepare.
